The Fairchild F-27 is a variant of the Fokker F-27, a twin-engine turboprop commercial passenger aircraft designed in 1950 and first flown in 1955. Produced by Fairchild Hiller under license from Fokker, it featured an initial tail-heavy prototype that was later redesigned with a lengthened fuselage for balance and capacity enhancement. The first operational F-27, operated by West Coast Airlines, entered service in September 1958. Flown by numerous operators, these aircraft served as workhorses for small airlines before retiring from the frontline starting in the 1980s. Some are still in operation today. The F-27 paved way for the Fairchild Hiller 227, a stretched version, and inspired further developments like the Fokker F-50 and F-60 series.
