The Fairchild F-27 is a variant of the Fokker F-27, a twin-engine turbo-prop commercial passenger aircraft designed by Fokker in 1950. It took its maiden flight in 1955 and was produced under license by Fairchild Hiller in the US using Fokker's design. The prototype faced tail-heaviness, which led to a fuselage stretch of 3 feet, adding seats and adjusting the center of gravity. A Fairchild F-27 served as the first F-27 in operational service with West Coast Airlines in September 1958. Many operators utilized these aircraft, which excelled as frontline airliners for small carriers. The F-27's retirement began in the 1980s, but some are still in operation today. The F-27 inspired the development of Fairchild Hiller 227, a stretched version, and the Fokker F-50 and F-60, further design advancements based on the original F-27.
