The first flight took place in 1955. Under license from Fokker, Fairchild Hiller produced the aircraft in the U.S. The initial prototype was slightly tail-heavy; a redesign extended the fuselage by three feet, adjusting the center of gravity and adding three more seats. West Coast Airlines received the first operational F-27 in September 1958. Flown by numerous operators, these aircraft served as frontline airliners for small carriers, demonstrating exceptional performance. Retirement commenced in the 1980s; however, some remain in service today. The F-27 led to the development of the Fairchild Hiller 227 (a stretched version) and subsequent design advancements like the Fokker F-50 and F-60.
