Designed by Fokker in 1950, it had its maiden flight in 1955 and was manufactured under license by Fairchild Hiller in the US using the original F-27 design. The F-27 prototype was slightly tail-heavy, prompting a fuselage extension to address balance issues and increase seating capacity. West Coast Airlines received the first operational F-27 in September 1958. This aircraft was widely utilized by numerous operators, serving as primary airliners for small carriers and demonstrating remarkable performance. The F-27 fleet began retiring from service in the 1980s, with some still operational today. The F-27 inspired the development of Fairchild Hiller 227, a stretched version, and later Fokker F-50 and F-60 variants.
