Originally designed by Fokker in 1950, the Fairchild F-27 is a twin-engine turbo-prop commercial airliner that took its maiden flight in 1955. The Fairchild Hiller companies in the U.S. produced it under license from Fokker. A slight tail-heavy issue was resolved by lengthening the fuselage, adding more forward space for balance and three additional seats. West Coast Airlines operated the first Fairchild F-27 in September 1958, with numerous other operators following suit. These aircraft provided stellar service for small airlines before being gradually retired from the early 1980s onwards, with some still operational today. The success of the F-27 led to the development of the Fairchild Hiller 227, a stretched version, and further design developments included the Fokker F-50 and F-60 series.
