The Fairchild F-27 is a variant of the Fokker F-27, a twin-engine turbo-prop commercial passenger aircraft designed in 1950 and flying for the first time in 1955. Under license from Fokker, the Fairchild Hiller companies in the US produced it using the F-27 design. The prototype was initially tail-heavy, prompting a fuselage extension to address the issue. This modification added an extra three feet and three seats to the aircraft. West Coast Airlines received the first operational F-27 in September 1958, and the aircraft served various operators over its years of operation. Retirement of these aircraft began in the 1980s; some are still in service today. The F-27's legacy includes the development of the Fairchild Hiller 227 (a stretched version), as well as the Fokker F-50 and F-60, which were further design advancements of the original F-27.
