The Fairchild F-27 is a version of the Fokker F-27, a twin-engine turbo-prop commercial airliner designed in 1950 and flew for the first time in 1955. Under license by Fokker, Fairchild Hiller companies in the U.S produced the aircraft. The prototype faced tail heaviness which was rectified by stretching the fuselage, enhancing capacity and balance. West Coast Airlines first operated a Fairchild F-27 in September 1958, serving numerous operators with remarkable performance. Retirement of these aircraft began in the 1980s, but some still operate today. The F-27 paved way for the development of Fairchild Hiller 227 and further designs like Fokker F-50 and F-60.
