The Fairchild F-27 is a variant of the Fokker F-27, a twin-engine turbo-prop commercial passenger airliner designed in 1950 and first flown in 1955. The Fokker design was licensed for production by Fairchild Hiller in the United States. The original prototype had slight tail-heaviness, resolved by extending the fuselage three feet, enhancing its capacity to 3 seats. West Coast Airlines received the first operational F-27 in September 1958, with numerous operators utilizing these aircraft over time. Serving as primary airliners for small carriers, they demonstrated exceptional performance. Retirement of F-27s began in the 1980s; some still remain in service today. The F-27 paved the way for the Fairchild Hiller 227, an extended version, and inspired further developments like the Fokker F-50 and F-60 series.
