Files are provided in multiple formats. The Fairchild F-27 is a variant of the Fokker F-27 twin-engine turbo-prop commercial passenger aircraft, designed by Fokker in 1950 and first flown in 1955. Under license from Fokker, the Fairchild Hiller companies in the US produced it using the F-27 design. The prototype experienced tail heaviness, prompting a fuselage extension to rebalance the aircraft and increase seating capacity. A Fairchild F-27 became the first F-27 in operational service with West Coast Airlines in September 1958. Flown by numerous operators, these aircraft proved successful as frontline airliners for small carriers. Retirement of Fairchild F-27s began in the 1980s, but some remain in use today. The F-27 inspired the development of the Fairchild Hiller 227 (a stretched version) and subsequent Fokker models, such as the F-50 and F-60.
