The Fairchild F-27 is an American-produced version of the Dutch Fokker F-27 twin-engine turbo-prop commercial airliner designed in 1950 and debuting in 1955. Manufactured by Fairchild Hiller under license from Fokker, this aircraft was initially tail-heavy, prompting a fuselage stretch of three feet to balance the center of gravity. The first operational F-27 was flown by West Coast Airlines in September 1958 and served various operators. These workhorses for small airlines remained in service until the 1980s, with some still flying today. The F-27 lineage includes the Fairchild Hiller 227, Fokker F-50, and F-60s.
