The Fairchild F-27 is a variant of the iconic Fokker F-27 twin-engine turboprop commercial passenger aircraft designed in 1950. It made its maiden flight in 1955 and was manufactured by Fairchild Hiller under license from Fokker in the United States. The initial prototype had a slight tail-heavy design, which led to a fuselage extension of 3 feet, increasing capacity to three additional seats. The first operational F-27 took flight with West Coast Airlines in September 1958 and served various operators worldwide. These aircraft served as frontline airliners for small airlines before being gradually phased out from the 1980s; some still remain in service today. The success of the F-27 resulted in the development of the Fairchild Hiller 227, a stretched version, and later on, the Fokker F-50 and F-60s, which were further design advancements based on the F-27 model.
