Fairchild Caminez Cam Engine Mechanism (Work In Progess)
grabcad
The Fairchild-Caminez 447 engine, an aircraft four-cylinder air-cooled radial, was designed by Harold Caminez, who had previously worked in the Engine Design Section of the US Army Air Service. The leminiscate-shape cam allowed one revolution per two piston cycles, resulting in half the speed for the same power impulses. Steel links connected the pistons to maintain contact with the cam, while steel cylinders featured aluminium heads. In 1926, this engine was first flown on an Avro 504 from Farmdale, Long Island, New York. After successful endurance tests in 1927, it became the first-ever axial engine to receive a US Dept of Commerce type certificate.
