Facial Muscles The muscles that control the face are numerous and complex. They can be categorized into several groups based on their function. The muscles of facial expression are primarily responsible for contracting and relaxing the skin to create various facial expressions. 1. Occipitofrontalis muscle: This muscle is located at the forehead, and it plays a key role in lifting the eyebrows and closing the eyelids. 2. Temporoparietalis muscle: Found on either side of the head, this muscle assists in rotating the scalp and moving the ears. 3. Procerus muscle: Positioned between the eyebrows, this muscle helps to contract the skin, forming wrinkles when it is contracted. 4. Nasalis muscle: This muscle controls the movement of the nostrils, opening or closing them as needed. 5. Depressor septi nasi muscle: Acting on the cartilage that separates the two sides of the nose, this muscle lowers the bridge of the nose. 6. Orbicularis oculi muscle: Surrounding the eyes, this muscle is responsible for closing and compressing the eyelids. 7. Risorius: Located at the corner of the mouth, this muscle assists in pulling the mouth upward to form a smile. 13. Zygomaticus major muscle: Found above the mouth, this muscle aids in elevating the corners of the mouth and forming a smile. 14. Zygomaticus minor muscle: Smaller than the zygomaticus major, this muscle also assists in elevating the corners of the mouth. 15. Levator labii superioris: Acting on the upper lip, this muscle raises it when it is engaged. 16. Levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle: Found above the nostrils and nose, this muscle lifts both the nose and the upper lip when it contracts. 17. Depressor labii inferioris muscle: Located below the lower lip, this muscle pulls it downward when it is engaged. 18. Levator anguli oris: Acting on the corners of the mouth, this muscle raises them when it is contracted. 19. Buccinator muscle: Surrounding the cheeks and lips, this muscle aids in compressing the cheeks to form a pucker. 20. Mentalis: Found below the lower lip, this muscle protrudes the chin when it is engaged.
