Jewel Faceted Hanging Planter

for Succulents and other houseplants

The big idea

During the pandemic i got into succulents as easy care, easy to propagate houseplants and as I propagated and acquired more I needed to ways to hold them, help them, care for them.

The jewel faceted design of these planters was inspired by the idea of stained glass and cut crystal stemware…. i loved the idea of the interplay of the organic plant forms and the geometric shapes in the container that would add texture and interest in the light from a window.

The design and functional details

When thinking of a hanging planter i had to think about how to hang it. I explored a lot of options but eventually settled on a single wire hanging method with 3 attachments at the pot rim.

I wanted to mold the attachments well to ensure they would not rip loose. and i wanted something to gather the lines from the 3 attachments into the one wire that it all hangs from.

My explorations led to this first version, almost steampunk-ish with a printable disc that addresses the gathering 3 lines into one, and then i added this printed beads as a little flair to add color pop, detail and a crasftsman vibe to the whole setup. these beads can be printed from scrap filament easily and you can see in the photos they can be added as tie offs for the lines that terminate with the disc..

Lastly i added a hook for the main wire, nothing special, it’s sized to easily go over a typical curtain rod.

Printing the models.

Nothing too special here, I've printed the examples here with a 0.6 nozzle using 0.2mm line height - normal standard quality settings on a calibrated and tuned Artillery Genius Pro.

Lower layer heights and/or smaller nozzles can sharpen the jeweled effect on the final piece. Silk and rainbow materials look really nice in the window, but mattes and solids also look nice.

I’ve managed to print the tall pot model without supports with the pot opening rim facing the bed.

Short and medium sizes can be printed face down also but benefit from tree supports to ensure a high quality bottom for the pot without risk of any sagging.
