This modified 3D printed face shield design has been approved for use by the Infection Prevention team at Christiana Hospital in Delaware, USA. On April 18, 2020, this approval was given. To get this hospital's seal of approval, certain requirements must be met: The clear plastic used for the shield material must be exactly 0.02 inches thick. Additionally, the clear plastic must extend 9.5 inches below the 3D printed portion that touches the forehead. This design is based on https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4233193. Several changes have been made to this original design: - The slots in the top of the mask have been removed to improve print quality and reduce droplet contact with the user from above. - The width of the ends where the elastic is attached has been increased to enhance strength as well as print quality. - Radii have been added to boost break strength when the shield is bent. - An optional bottom cap has been included, which can help with shield stability. This feature was particularly helpful when using 0.02-inch PVC. In addition to these modifications, I recommend constructing the mask with a seal along its entire forehead-contacting edge, from elastic to elastic, to improve user comfort and reduce droplet contact from above. To source the components that are currently in stock, consider the following options: Clear plastic for shield (thicker, requires cutting): https://www.mcmaster.com/87875k17 Clear plastic for shield (thin, not approved by hospital, but suitable for nursing homes and other facilities): https://amzn.to/39IybUN Elastic: https://amzn.to/3482VNP Rubber Seal: https://amzn.to/39MTNQ5 The filament I typically use is Hatchbox.
