Face Shield for Healthcare Workers

Face Shield for Healthcare Workers

thingiverse

Based on HanochH Face Shield design, tested and fitted. This triage face shield is designed for healthcare workers worldwide who need PPE. The modifications include a closed top shield to protect eyes and top-down droplets. Not meant to replace professional healthcare face shields, but in these trying times, we do our best. I don't claim these are effective against viral particles by any means; their purpose is similar to other shields: to reduce directional droplets. UPDATE: 4/11 Version SS06 is a complete redesign aimed at improving comfort, ease of loading, and dramatically shortening printing time. Elastic band retention and forehead shape adaptation have also been improved. It's strongly recommended to print using the new version SS06 moving forward. Printing and Assembly Instructions: Frame: Print on FDM printer with available material, PETG, ABS, PLA - all fine. Print bottom down, no brim, no support. There are two versions, both closed top, one shorter than the other. Clear Shield: Designed for A4 or Legal paper, an 8.5"X11" sheet of transparent plastic material is required. It's meant to be disposable as COVID-19 has shown resilience on plastic surfaces. This can be sourced from overhead transparency sheets, clear transparent printer paper, custom-cut soda bottle, clear packaging plastic, or polycarbonate sheets. The shield is to be taped to the frame once inserted into the frame slot, leaving approximately 2-3mm above the frame housing. Elastic: Frame retention to head is designed to work with any type of elastic band. Preferably non-fabric so it can be sprayed down and disinfected. Rubberbands work, silicone bands are better, elastic straps also work when other options are unavailable. Foam (Optional): 3/8" to 1/2" wide self-stick Weatherseal Rubber Foam with a referable thickness of 5/16" is designed to be used with this face shield. Peel off the adhesive backing and place a 6" strip on the inside forehead portion of the face shield for comfort and complete seal. Note that rubber foam seal should be discarded and replaced if contamination is suspected. Make no attempt to disinfect rubber foam. This component, similar to the clear shield, is designed to be disposable. This design originated from HanochH and I modified it to suit healthcare needs in the field. Feel free to share. If there's a local need for healthcare workers, please ask the local 3D printing community for assistance. I don't have the manufacturing capability to provide for healthcare around the world, but I know most 3D printing hobbyists and companies would love to help. This is not a replacement for standard PPE face shields, but in case of an emergency, this is the LAST RESORT PPE that can be locally manufactured anywhere within a few hours. Please follow the disinfecting protocol in the local region. I cannot guarantee product safety or barrier efficiency. This is meant to be THE LAST RESORT. This is not ideal, but it's something almost any 3D printing hobbyist can make and assemble anywhere around the world. No tools needed, no custom parts needed - elastic, transparent sheet. Does NOT guard against viral particles, does NOT prevent all droplets, visibility depends on transparency used, NOT a replacement for a professional face shield, FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY, not for profit! I cannot guarantee its effectiveness and will modify the design with feedback. Thank you all for your service and for putting yourselves on the frontline in the fight against COVID-19. Stay vigilant!
