Update May 25: My printer breaks down, rendering it unable to function properly. I can no longer work on this project in its current state. A handmade alternative is now my only option. There are high-quality dog masks available on the market, but they often fail to fit comfortably or come with a hefty price tag. With confirmed cases of COVID-19 among domestic pets, it's essential that service dogs can accompany their owners safely outside. To ensure a proper fit for this mask, measurements should be taken based on the dog's muzzle while in a relaxed and panting state. This will prevent any risk of injury or discomfort. Due to the unique shape of a fitted mask on a dog, two layers may be necessary. Additionally, sewing the material can compromise its filtration properties; therefore, adding a safe adhesive to these areas is crucial to prevent weaknesses in the filtration process. The first layer consists of cloth, which should be selected with care, just as one would choose their own fabric. This layer must be negatively charged and repellent, making microfiber or soft, woven polyester excellent options. A boning or busk is applied to this layer to maintain the filter's position and prevent material from dropping onto the dog's snout. The outer layer can be replaced for disinfection purposes, while the inner layer should be carefully washed. The second layer, designed to cover the entire mask, is intended as a filtration system. Ensure that a section of positively charged material covers the exhaust valve to prevent accidental infection of others. A suitable example of this type of material is terry cloth. Further updates will follow as I test and refine my prints and measurements.
