General info: This custom dispensing head was developed specifically for the FABtotum machine (http://www.fabtotum.com). An example of solder paste dispensing on a PCB is presented in this video. Also, see the communication test between the dispensing head and FABtotum. The example PCB used is an FTDI circuit (http://archive.fabacademy.org/2016/fablabsingapore/students/98/exercise06.html) designed with KiCAD (1206 Imperial). The PCB was also milled using FABtotum and FlatCAM. A 20G 0.6mm ID 1.5'' dispensing needle is used to dispense diluted solder paste with IPA: -Custom dispensing head is 3D printed with FABtotum. -CAD files for dispensing head of TwinTeeth (http://www.diyouware.com/node/174) were adapted for FABtotum. -Electronics consist of an Arduino Nano v3 with our firmware to control a 28BYJ-48-5V step motor with a ULN2003 driver. -CAM software rpt2pnp (https://github.com/hzeller/rpt2pnp) was adapted to fit the needs of FABtotum. Find all necessary information by clicking the download button, including CAD files, Arduino firmware, and CAM software. You will also need to print HDB support for FABtotum. Howto: -3D printing: Print all downloaded parts and the HDB support for FABtotum. -Buying: Purchase a FABtotum HDB kit, an Arduino Nano v3, a 28BYJ-48-5V, a ULN2003, lead-free solder paste, Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and an M5 lead screw with a pitch of 0.8 mm. -Firmware: Load the .ino file into the Arduino Nano. -Integration: Connect all printed parts using screws, couplers, etc. Then connect the dispenser to the HDB support, the aluminum plate, and the PCB of the HDB kit with supplied screws. Add the electronics on the printed plate and connect them with cables (more information in HDB of FABtotum). -CAM: Build the supplied source code using "make" and generate .gcode and .ps files using your KiCAD rpt file as input (more information in rpt2pnp). -Solder paste: Dilute lead-free solder paste (keep safety measures) with IPA. -Dispensing: Find actions and meaning of commands in the supplied .ino file of Arduino Nano. Move the needle right above the first pad on your PCB (see .ps file). Paste generated gcode into the Jog page and execute it. License: -The parts modified from TwinTeeth have a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License, marked in Basic Information. -The modified rpt2pnp code has GNU General Public License v3.0 -All other components have the license mentioned on this youmagine page Next Steps: -Lower the syringe and use a 0.5 inch (instead of 1.5) syringe needle or conical syringe tip to reduce pressure drop during paste extrusion. This means cutting the aluminum plate of HDB to lower the syringe. -Thicken the Arduino Nano placeholder because it is easy to break. -Modify CAM software to perform some dummy dispenses automatically before starting dispensing on PCB, and make quicker movements. -Build a pick and place head for a FABtotum machine.
