Faberdashery Spool Remix Hack
thingiverse
I received a loose coil of filament from Proto Pasta thinking I could just lay it on my printer's spool holder, but I was wrong! This led to a frantic search for a solution, which finally ended at the Faberdashery Spool by FablabMoebius and the remix by tschaboo. I started with the remix because it promised to use much less filament. I printed two sides and three forks, but when I tried to assemble the spool, I found that my coil's inside diameter was much smaller than required based on the dimensions of the forks... Not wanting to take time for a reimplementation, I took the fork STL files to Tinkercad and cut out some material. The arms of the fork are also very long (too long for my printer), so I chopped part of them off as well. It was a quick and dirty job, and that's what I got. As it turns out, I had cut too much out of the internal dimensions of the fork, but I didn't want to take time and filament to modify my changes in Tinkercad and reprint all three. Instead, I created a simple spacer to fit on each fork. In the end, it worked, mostly. I should have cut the arms even shorter so the spool would spin properly on my existing spool holder, but I was in a hurry to print with the filament. The bottom line is that this is a hack job, but it might be a flexible design for me going forward as I receive loose coils with different internal diameters.
