Human: Phoenix Hand with 3D Printed Wearable Cuff Design Adaptation. A 30-degree gauntlet block was designed and added to an educator's guide for bringing this hand project into your classroom or club. Post-Printing Thermo-forming the gauntlet involved using a 30-degree angle block to rest the gauntlet on, ensuring proper tension. Original files were sourced from the Enable Community Foundation website. Estimating the forearm length of a small child was a crucial step in designing this hand project. Designing This Hand Project 3D Phoenix robotic hand files were downloaded from the Enable Community Foundation website at www.enablecommunityfoundation.org. Our Fab Four team worked together to modify the gauntlet design by adding a 3D printed wearable cuff. Project: FAB FOUR Phoenix Hand Project: FAB FOUR Phoenix Hand Technology for Social Good: At the Makerbot Makeathon on May 21-22, 2016, we worked on printing and assembling a 3D printed hand with a customizable wearable cuff. At Convent of the Sacred Heart, we have successfully created various 3D printed hand models: Raptor hand, Raptor Reloaded, and Cyborg Beast hand. All open-source files are available at the Enable Community website. We were interested in updating the Phoenix hand. This project can be done with students and volunteers from middle school age up. This has been successfully integrated into our math, science, technology, and engineering classes for the past two years. Various skills are learned through this project: linear scaling, ratio, proportion, percents, direct measurement, web design, and reiteration. The step-by-step guide can be found on the attached link and takes approximately 24 hours to print the entire hand and about 120 minutes to assemble. Assessment: Students create a Google site for recipients to follow the progress of their hand printing and assembly. At the end of the project, students write a reflection on their experience.
