The F-82 Twin Mustang, derived from the P-51 Mustang, was lastly produced as a piston-engine fighter for the US Air Force. Developed initially as a long-range escort fighter during WWII, it saw operations only postwar; by Strategic Air Command as a long-range escort and by Air Defense Command with radar, replacing Northrop P-61 Black Widows as day/night interceptors. In the Korean War, Japan-based F-82s were among the first USAF aircraft over Korea; they downed the initial three North Korean planes, including a Yak-11 by 68th Fighter Squadron.
