Tortured by an array of mechanical, hydraulic, powerplant-related, and aerodynamic issues, the Chance Vought F7U Cutlass looked like it had been minted from solid gold, even if its flight capabilities fell woefully short. The -1 version in particular resembled Buck Rodgers' futuristic arsenal that had somehow landed in 1948, the year of her inaugural flight. Outpaced by rapidly advancing technology and crippled by a dismal safety record, the Cutlass was effectively stranded and retired by 1955.
