I use the MAG3110 compass module for these reasons: 1. Integrated compasses that come with most flight controllers are completely useless because flight controllers are normally surrounded by wires carrying serious amperage, which creates electromagnets. 2. The MAG3110 works with boards that have integrated compasses, unlike the HMC5983, as you cannot have more than one HMC5983 on the same I2C bus. So if you have a board with an HMC5983, unless you physically break off its connectors, you cannot use an external one. 3.
