The F-5A/B Freedom Fighter and F-5E/F Tiger II, Northrop's widely used light supersonic fighter aircraft, were designed in the 1960s. Hundreds of these continue to serve globally into the early 21st century, with production ending for F-5A in 1972 and upgraded F-5E in 1987. The initial F-5 Freedom Fighter had over 800 produced by 1972; its successor, the F-5E Tiger II, boasted 1,400 produced due to its improved capabilities. Many F-5s have been upgraded through various programs and continued service well into the '90s and '00s. The aircraft family's sub-variants include reconnaissance versions like the RF-5 Tigereye.
