The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather supersonic jet fighter bomber developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the US Navy. Entering service in 1960 with the U.S. Navy, it quickly proved its adaptability and became a key part of the US Marine Corps and US Air Force air wings by the mid-1960s. As a large and powerful fighter, the Phantom can reach speeds over Mach 2.2 and carry more than 18,000 pounds of weapons on nine external hardpoints, including missiles and bombs. Like other interceptors, it was initially designed without an internal cannon but later models incorporated an M61 Vulcan rotary cannon in 1959. The F-4 set multiple world records for performance, including absolute speed and altitude records, starting from its introduction.
