The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is a stealthy fighter aircraft developed by the United States in the late 1980s to replace the US Air Force's F-15s. Initially designed for aerial combat, it also has the capability to conduct ground-based military support missions, electronic attack missions, or electromagnetic origin intelligence-gathering missions. Lockheed Martin is responsible for most of the aircraft, including its armament system, and assembles the final product. Boeing's defense division provided the wings and rear fuselage, and integrated the avionics. The aircraft was referred to as F-22 or F/A-22 before entering service with the US Air Force in December 2005, officially adopting the designation F-22A; it is often nicknamed the F-22 Raptor. The United States considers the F-22 a strategic element of maintaining air superiority for the US Air Force, claiming it remains unmatched by any other existing or developing fighter aircraft. In April 2009, the US Department of Defense proposed, with Congressional approval, ending its orders, limiting F-22 purchases to 187 units, while the Senate and House passed a budget bill in July 2009 cutting all funding for production.
