The F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat fighter aircraft developed by Grumman for the U.S. Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program after the collapse of the F-111B project failed to materialize. The F-14 was designed with lessons learned from air combat experience against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War as part of America's teen-series fighter aircraft, a new generation of aircraft engineered for superior performance. The F-14 made its maiden flight in December 1970 and entered service with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in 1974, taking over from the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II as the Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter and fleet defense interceptor. In this role, the Tomcat served the U.S. Navy effectively well into the 1990s. In the mid-1990s, the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system was integrated into the F-14's arsenal, allowing it to conduct precision ground-attack missions with greater accuracy and effectiveness.
