The 61st edition of the Formula 1 World Championship is won by Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing) among drivers and Red Bull Racing among constructors. Two significant changes are introduced: on the one hand, fueling stops being forbidden, drivers must carry enough gasoline for the duration of a race; on the other hand, the point scoring system is modified: the top ten now score points, with the winner receiving 25 points compared to 10 from 2003 to 2009. Mercedes returns as a team, fifty-five years after its last participation in the Formula 1 World Championship, and creates sensation by bringing back Michael Schumacher from retirement, who teams up with young Nico Rosberg. The championship ranking gives rise throughout the season to a permanent seesaw battle for first place between Fernando Alonso (who wins his first victory for Ferrari on his F10 during the inaugural race in Bahrain), Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, and Mark Webber. Thus, at the start of the last race in Abu Dhabi, for the first time since the championship's creation, four drivers are in contention for the title; Alonso leads with 246 points ahead of Webber (238 points), his teammate Sebastian Vettel (who, despite his 231 points, nine pole positions, four wins, and nine podiums has never led the ranking) and Lewis Hamilton (222 points). Vettel, who starts from pole position, emerges victorious at the end of the fifty-five laps. Alonso mirrors his race on Webber's, a losing strategy that sees him finish seventh in the Grand Prix behind Vitaly Petrov's Renault, while Webber takes eighth place. Although Hamilton crosses the finish line in second place, he gains no points on Vettel, who becomes the youngest champion of all time at 23 years 4 months and 11 days old. He finishes the season with 10 pole positions (the best performance of the season), 5 wins (like Alonso), 10 podiums (like Alonso and Webber) and 382 laps in first place. Alonso ends up as vice-champion, four points behind. Red Bull Racing, which fields a Red Bull RB6-Renault, wins its first constructors' title.
