The 2009 Formula One World Championship was the 60th edition of the driver's championship. Organized by the FIA, it took place in seventeen races between March 29 and November 1, 2009. It was won by British driver Jenson Button and his team, Brawn GP Formula One Team. Honda Racing F1 Team withdrew abruptly from competition at the end of 2008 despite investing heavily in a car to compete in the 2009 season. Ross Brawn, technical director of Honda, and several colleagues bought the team and registered it under the name Brawn GP Formula One Team with drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello and Mercedes engine. The BGP 001 (initially called Honda RA109), featuring several innovative technical solutions including a double diffuser, quickly proved to be particularly effective and well suited to the new technical regulations that included the return to smooth tires. Jenson Button won his first Grand Prix of the season in Melbourne and continued on a winning streak with four pole positions, six victories, nine podiums, and sixteen points finishes. The British driver was thus crowned world champion at the penultimate race of the season in Brazil, putting himself out of reach of his last rivals, teammate Rubens Barrichello and young Sebastian Vettel. For his first year at Red Bull Racing, Sebastian Vettel finished as runner-up to Button by eleven points, winning four races. His teammate Mark Webber won two races; it was the sixth victory for the team led by technical director Adrian Newey, designer of the RB5-Renault. Brawn GP, world champion constructors in their only season of Formula One, were bought out by Mercedes-Benz and renamed Mercedes Grand Prix with Ross Brawn remaining as its director. At the end of the season, Scuderia Ferrari terminated the contract of Kimi Räikkönen who gave way to Fernando Alonso.
