The F-86 Canarias is the last in a series of six warships built by Spain for its navy, each based on the US Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates. Constructed in two groups, the second batch (F-85 and 86) included several upgrades such as an enhanced combat-data system, updated SPS-49 and SQR-19 sets, and a new Meroka mount. The Mk92 Mod 6 CORT replaced its predecessor, offering improved capabilities against sea-skimming missiles. The electronic warfare suite was also revamped. Spanish ships have a slightly wider beam than their US counterparts and were built with extra weight capacity for future enhancements. Other notable changes from the standard model include the use of Meroka in place of Phalanx and the installation of RAN-12L air search radar to provide low-horizon coverage against sea-skimmers cueing the Meroka CIWS mount. The Nettunel EW suite (based on Italian-built Nettuno, constructed in Spain) replaced the SLQ-32 system used on US ships. The F-86 Canarias class is currently undergoing a mid-life update (MLU), featuring a new electronic warfare suite, improved combat-data system, upgraded Mk92 fire control system, new electrical generators, removal of the SQR-19 TACTASS towed array, and habitability enhancements. Four vessels have already undergone modernization.
