I've got a few tanks set up with drilled bottoms and use a 1/2-inch PVC standpipe to regulate the water level. Initially, I went with a cap-style setup, but if it became clogged, I'd end up with a mess on my hands. So, I came up with an alternative that still provides straining capabilities while allowing for unimpeded drainage when the water gets too high. This design fits snugly over a male 1/2-inch PVC fitting, making it a sleek and efficient solution.
