External GPS unit for DIY 737 simulator for "Martin737" project
thingiverse
This project is in development, an unfinished external GPS panel for DIY 737 simulators or any other flight simulator models where you want the GPS unit to be displayed externally with physical buttons. When completed, all normal FSX GPS unit button functions will work. Typically, the right corner button would use a dual concentric rotary encoder, but I'll create a double rotary encoder button myself using one rotary encoder (as shown) connected to a push button and then another lower turning button linked to two push buttons on the backside. Example images show buttons that are somewhat ugly and have large holes because they were enlarged too much. If you have a good printer with precise settings, you'll get better results. Edit #1: I've created new buttons and added images of them. They're much better than earlier ones, and now you can see the PCBs installed on the PCB holding frame. Edit #2: I've added new images showing what it looks like in use or in a possible sim setup. I've also included 3D model designs for mounting framing, which I've already printed myself. * Screen: I purchased a 7" screen from Aliexpress (skylarpu 1024x600 IPS). Here's the link that may not work when you read this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/skylarpu-1024-600-IPS-Screen-Display-LCD-TFT-Monitor-EJ070NA-01J-with-Remote-Driver-Control-Board/32709495542.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.7f564c4df73pE7 Any screen with dimensions of (Display Area): 156.14*92.60 mm (Display Outline): 165.75*105.39*3.40 mm will work. You can find these same screens with different branding on Aliexpress, and they seem to have the same PCB design. * Buttons controller: I'll be using a BBI-32 controller from Leo Bodnar https://leobodnar.com * Turn knob: I'll attempt to design a fitting for this one http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:851918 thanks to m0ng00se for creating an awesome knob design. * Bolts: From Aliexpress, DIN912 M3x10 mm M3*10 mm 304 Stainless Steel Hex Socket Head Cap Screw Bolts. Any M3 bolt with a length of 10 millimeters will do the job. * Button types: The small ones are "momentary push buttons" and the larger one is "rotary encoder" I'll upload 3D model design files when they're ready, so you can modify them to suit your screen. *The 3D model file is uploaded as a zip file, and modifications may be made. Remember: all thing files may still change and change frequently.
