Last minute: Apparently: S U C C E S S ! ! The problem was in the original stl file (simple files did work, a lot of existing files did not) I cleaned the original stl with MeshFix, and ... magic ! out_ext.stl is obtained after pre-cleaning the input file. As explained a few lines down, MANIPULATING STL FILES SOMETIMES GIVES ERRORS These can occur at various moments, also at slicing. I dont know if the source is in the cutting operation or in the original file itself. Apparently, there are softwares that can correct the error, but I have no expereinece with this type of corrections. The goal here is to explain the type of manipulations you can try on an stl file. Cutting an object and extending it like a limousine. Shown here in a very simple way. Will develop later. Version 10 is more elaborate. Anyway you can expect rendering problems sometimes (non-manifold problem). You work in steps: first install the model 'vertically' and position the cut . . . It was developed in response to a question. Using standard openscad functions, I would: Put my original object A ("to be extended") along the Z axis. Move ("translate") it vertically to determine where the XY plane will cut. Then cut it in two with a larger cube ("difference"), and move the two half parts (A1 and A2) away one from the other. Then do a "linear_extrusion" of the "projection of my object, giving B The "union" of the three parts (A1, A2, B) could do the job. All the process can be made customizable, with the desired length between A1 and A2. I used https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3076864/files Tiny Car to demonstrate with a real model. I added my 'strange' test model to practice with.
