Exploring Castle Hill, Ardrossan - Trench E
sketchfab
Trench E – situated on the southeastern slopes of the hill, examines a ‘mound’ previously mapped on historic Ordnance Survey maps. Most of this mound has been eliminated by road construction, and Trench E uncovered fabric from another 19th century path and leveled up material (all stones) suggesting that the dip between the hill and the mound was once more pronounced. Bedrock exposed in the side of the mound reveals at its core a bedrock outcrop. Within the mound material, a fragment of post-medieval reduced ware pottery is recovered, indicating a late 16th to 17th century date for some activity here. Exploring Castle Hill is part of a Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Project led by Northlight Heritage for Garnock Connections. The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Environment Scotland. Excavations were carried out by Rathmell Archaeology & Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society.
