Yvan Theys was a renowned Belgian painter, draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor born on September 1, 1936. He passed away on July 1, 2005. Along with Alphons Freymuth and Reinier Lucassen, Theys was a key figure in the new figuration movement of the 1960s. This innovative style combined recognizable figurative elements with expressive brushstrokes, flat backgrounds, geometric symbols, and lyrical details. As the decade progressed, Theys joined forces with Roger Raveel, Raoul De Keyser, and Etienne Elias to represent the "new vision" movement in Flanders. His artwork often explored universal themes such as relationships between men and women, drawing inspiration from world events and everyday life. Theys' paintings frequently featured emotionally charged figures, sometimes fragmented or viewed from unique perspectives. In his later work, he reinterpreted famous masterpieces by Pablo Picasso and Edvard Munch, further expanding the boundaries of his art. His studio was filled with Japanese prints, which influenced his creation of wooden sculptures, assemblages, and bronzes that balanced figuration and abstraction.
