This medieval carving is set into a Quoin stone above the Guard House of the bawn of Kilkea Castle, a multi-phase Medieval Castle built over centuries. The stone stands approximately 5 meters above ground level. The "Evil Eye" concept from medieval times suggests that an unknown person's gaze could unintentionally curse any human being, beast, or crop, causing it to sicken or be blighted by its evil influence. In the medieval period, it was common practice to adorn castles and churches with symbols designed to ward off the "Evil Eye." This elaborate stone features a man engaged in a sexual act with a semi-human creature that has the head of a dog or wolf. Another beast appears to be having intercourse with the man while also devouring him at the same time, as a bird pecks at his nipple. It's possible that "Sheela-na-Gigs" served a similar purpose, drawing attention and thereby attracting the Evil Eye Curse through their hyper-sexual nature.
