The 3M 6000 series respirator protects its wearer, but exhaust is vented freely without filtration. A 3D-printed device makes it easy to add an exhaust filter to this respirator, potentially safeguarding others from infection spread by the wearer. Designed to secure a small filter bag to the respirator, it replaces the strap-securing piece on the front of the 3M 6000 series respirator. The original front piece is pulled from the round exhaust port and replaced by a new 3D-printed snout that copies the design of the original strap mechanism, making strap transfer simple. A filter bag with a 6-inch opening perimeter slides over the snout and is taped in place. This bag can be made from a 3.5 x 6 inch rectangle cut from a disposable vacuum cleaner bag. The bag is formed by folding and taping the cut rectangle to create a wrapped 6-inch edge as the opening. The strap connection wings on this device must have some flexibility. We had this device 3D printed at Shapeways.com using their Versatile Plastic material, which provided the desired strength and flexibility in nylon.
