Fritware masterpieces crafted under vibrant glazes, 1200-20, shine brightly in Iran's museums. Museum no. C.170-1977 marks a stunning fritware ewer born in Kashan around 1200-20, when this city's artisans were renowned for producing some of the most breathtaking Islamic ceramics. The craftsmen skillfully employed an ingenious double-shell technique to create the body of this masterpiece. First, they formed the plain inner shell – the liquid container – and applied a bold monochrome turquoise glaze, firing it in the standard manner. Next, they crafted the perforated outer shell around the turquoise core, adorning it with black paint. Certain design elements, including inscriptions above and below the intricate openwork area, were carefully scratched through this ebony hue. Finally, the artisans glazed the outer shell in radiant turquoise to match the inner shell's gleam, firing the entire piece once more.
