Name: Ancient Horsetail Tree Scientific: Calamites undulatus This Variation: 12 of 12 Habitat: This ancient tree-sized plant thrived in the Carboniferous to early Permian Period (approximately 360 to 250 million years ago) and had a strong affinity for sandy riverbanks and floodplains. It was often found as part of the undergrowth in prehistoric forests. Range: Fossil evidence reveals that this plant had an extensive global distribution, with remains discovered on every continent. Notes: This ancient tree was closely related to modern horsetails (genus Equisetum) but stood out due to its towering height of over 10 meters. Its woody stem was surprisingly delicate and grew in the undergrowth of prehistoric forests. Several sub-genera of Calamites existed, with this species belonging to the category Calamitina and being one of the most well-known members of the Calamites group. Once emerged from its underground rhizomes or seeds, the terrestrial parts did not branch. These plants grew through a complex network of interconnected rhizomes as well as from seeds.
