Name: Ancient Tree Horsetail Scientific: Calamites undulatus This Variation: 12 of 12 Habitat: This ancient tree-sized plant roamed the earth during the Carboniferous to early Permian Period (approximately 360 to 250 million years ago). It seemed to prefer living near sandy riverbanks and floodplains. It was a key part of the sub-story in prehistoric forests. Range: Fossils have been discovered all over the world, indicating this plant had a global presence. Notes: An extinct, tree-sized plant that lived during the Carboniferous and early Permian periods (approximately 360 to 250 million years ago) which is closely related to modern horsetails (genus Equisetum). Unlike their herbaceous modern counterparts, these plants grew into medium-sized trees reaching heights of over 10 meters. Although its stem was woody, it remained a delicate plant that thrived in the sub-story of prehistoric forests. Several sub-genera of Calamites existed, this species fell under the category Calamitina and is probably the most well-known of the Calamites. The terrestrial parts did not branch once emerged from the central stem. These plants grew from an underground network of connected rhizomes as well as from seeds.
