Name: Ancient Spiral Horsetail Tree Scientific: Calamites undulatus This Variation: 9 of 12 Habitat: Extinct tree-sized plant that once thrived on sandy riverbanks and floodplains during the Carboniferous to early Permian Period (about 360 to 250 million years ago). It dominated the sub-story of prehistoric forests, casting a shadow over its surroundings. Range: Fossils of this remarkable plant have been discovered worldwide, indicating a global presence. Its ability to adapt and thrive in diverse environments allowed it to spread across the globe. Notes: This ancient tree-sized plant lived during the Carboniferous and early Permian periods (about 360 to 250 million years ago), closely related to modern horsetails (genus Equisetum). Unlike its herbaceous counterparts, these plants grew up to 10 meters tall, with woody stems that supported delicate foliage. Several sub-genera of Calamites existed, and this species, Calamitina, is probably the most well-known. Its terrestrial parts did not branch once emerged from the central stem.
