Spiral Horsetail Tree Scientific: Calamites undulatus This Variation: 8 of 12 Habitat: Extinct tree-sized plant that once thrived on sandy riverbanks and floodplains during the Carboniferous to early Permian Period, roughly spanning 360 to 250 million years ago. Range: Fossils have been discovered worldwide, indicating a global distribution of this ancient plant species. Notes: An extinct, tree-like plant that lived during the Carboniferous and early Permian periods, around 360 to 250 million years ago. The modern horsetails (genus Equisetum) are closely related to this ancient species. Unlike their herbaceous counterparts, these plants grew as medium-sized trees, reaching heights of over 10 meters. Their woody stems were delicate, and they thrived in the sub-story of prehistoric forests. Several sub-genera of Calamites existed, with Calamitina being one of them. This species is probably the most well-known among the Calamites. The terrestrial parts did not branch once they emerged from the central stem. These plants grew from an underground network of rhizomes as well as from seeds. Included in this Package: 12 models in total Standard -- 152,131 polygons -- 7.38m tall.
