Name: Spiral Horsetail Tree Scientific: Calamites undulatus This Variation: 7 of 12 Habitat: This tree-sized plant is now extinct and was found in the Carboniferous to early Permian Period (about 360 to 250 million years ago). It likely grew on sandy riverbanks and floodplains. It was a part of prehistoric forests' sub-story. Range: Fossils have been discovered all over the world, showing that this plant had a global range. Notes: This tree-sized plant lived during the Carboniferous and early Permian periods (about 360 to 250 million years ago) and is closely related to modern horsetails (genus Equisetum). Unlike its herbaceous modern counterparts, it was a medium-sized tree that grew up to 10 meters high. Its stem was woody but delicate, growing in prehistoric forests' sub-story. Several sub-genera of Calamites existed, and this species fell into the category Calamitina, which is probably the best-known Calamites. The terrestrial parts did not branch once emerged from the central stem. These plants grew from an underground connected network of rhizomes as well as from seeds.
