Unlike their herbaceous counterparts, these plants were medium-sized trees reaching heights over 10 meters. Despite its woody stem, this delicate plant grew in prehistoric forests' sub-story. Several Calamites sub-genera existed, with this species belonging to the Calamitina category and being possibly the most well-known of the Calamites. Once emerging from its central stem, the terrestrial parts did not branch out. These plants grew from an underground network of connected rhizomes as well as from seeds.
