Name: Spiral Horsetail Tree Scientific: Calamites undulatus This Variation: 3 of 12 Habitat: A long-extinct tree-sized plant that thrived from the Carboniferous to early Permian Periods (about 360 to 250 million years ago), with a preference for sandy riverbanks and floodplains, where it formed a crucial part of prehistoric forests' sub-story. Range: Fossils found worldwide suggest this plant had a global presence, adapting to various environments across the globe. Notes: A tree-sized plant from the Carboniferous and early Permian periods (about 360 to 250 million years ago), closely related to modern horsetails (genus Equisetum). Unlike their herbaceous counterparts, these plants were medium-sized trees reaching heights over 10 meters. Despite its woody stem, this delicate plant grew in prehistoric forests' sub-story. Several Calamites sub-genera existed, with this species belonging to the Calamitina category and being possibly the most well-known of the Calamites. Once emerging from its central stem, the terrestrial parts did not branch out. These plants grew from an underground network of connected rhizomes as well as from seeds.
