Habitat: This extinct tree-like plant thrived during the Carboniferous Period to the late Triassic (approximately 360 to 205 million years ago). Range: Fossils of this plant have been discovered extensively across the globe. Notes: Although it resembled a tree, the Spiny Scale Tree was most closely related to modern quillworts. As it grew, its central stem split into exactly two branches, which then further divided into two more, repeating this dichotomical pattern until full maturity was reached. Oval-shaped cones adorned the ends of its branches. As the plant aged, it shed its lower leaves, leaving behind a distinctive scar-pattern on its stem and branches – hence its name.
