Spiny Scale Tree Scientific Name: Lepidodendron aculeatum This Variation: 3 of 12 Habitat: This extinct tree-sized plant once dominated the Carboniferous Period to the late Triassic (about 360 to 205 million years ago). Range: Fossil finds have been widespread across the globe. Notes: While it resembled a tree, this plant was actually most closely related to modern quillworts. As it grew, its central stem split into exactly two branches, which further divided into exactly two more as the plant matured; this dichotomical branching continued until maturity was reached. Oval-shaped cones adorned the ends of its branches. As the plant grew, lower leaves fell off, leaving behind a scar-pattern on its stem and branches, earning it the name "scale tree".
