Name: Scarlet Bottlebrush Scientific: Melaleuca rugulosa This Variation: 10 of 12 Habitat: This plant thrives in shrubland and forest areas near swamps and watercourses where it grows in sandy depressions with soils that are seasonally moist. Range: Naturally occurring from the south east corner of South Australia, including the Eyre Peninsula to western Victoria. It is found in mallee scrubs and low open woodland in the northern Grampians, the Big Desert, the Little Desert, and the Mount Lofty Ranges. Due to its showy nature and extreme hardiness, it has become a garden and parkland favourite within Australia. Notes: A shrub with an open straggly habit, stiff, sharply pointed leaves and bright red bottlebrush flowers tipped with yellow in summer. It grows up to 5m tall. The flowers are a shade of red to purple, tipped with yellow and arranged in spikes around the branches that continue to grow after flowering. Flowering occurs from November to December, sometimes in other months, followed by fruit that are woody capsules. It is a very hardy, low-maintenance plant, tolerant of pollution and drought, and often used as an ornamental in gardens and parklands.
