Scarlet Bottlebrush: Melaleuca rugulosa This Variation: 8 of 12 Habitat: Scarlet Bottlebrush thrives in shrubland and forest near swamps and watercourses where it grows in sandy depressions with soils that are seasonally moist. Range: Found naturally from the south east corner of South Australia, including the Eyre Peninsula to western Victoria. It inhabits mallee scrubs and low open woodland in the northern Grampians, Big Desert, Little Desert, and Mount Lofty Ranges. Due to its showy nature and extreme hardiness, it is a popular choice for gardens and parklands within Australia. Notes: A shrub with an open straggly habit, Scarlet Bottlebrush features stiff, sharply pointed leaves and bright red bottlebrush flowers tipped with yellow in summer. It grows up to 5m tall. The flowers range from a shade of red to purple, tipped with yellow, and are arranged in spikes around the branches that continue to grow after flowering. Flowering occurs from November to December, sometimes extending into other months, followed by woody capsules. This plant is very hardy, low-maintenance, tolerant of pollution and drought, and often used as an ornamental in gardens and parklands.
