Scarlet Bottlebrush Scientific: Melaleuca rugulosa This Variation: 5 of 12 Habitat: This shrub thrives in open woodland and mallee scrub environments where it adapts to seasonally moist soils. Range: Native to the south eastern corner of South Australia, including Eyre Peninsula, western Victoria, and northern Grampians, Big Desert, Little Desert, and Mount Lofty Ranges. It is a popular choice for gardens and parklands due to its vibrant appearance and hardiness. Notes: A striking shrub with stiff, pointed leaves and bright red flowers tipped with yellow in summer. Growing up to 5 meters tall, the flowers are arranged in spikes around the branches, continuing to grow after flowering. Flowering occurs from November to December, sometimes extending to other months, followed by woody capsules. It is a low-maintenance plant, tolerant of pollution and drought, making it an ideal ornamental for gardens and parklands.
