Scarlet Bottlebrush: Name Melaleuca rugulosa This Variation: 4 of 12 Habitat: This plant grows in shrubland, forest near swamps, watercourses where it's found in sandy depressions, soils that are seasonally moist. Range: Occurs naturally from south east corner of South Australia including Eyre Peninsula to western Victoria. It is found in mallee scrubs, low open woodland in northern Grampians, Big Desert, Little Desert, Mount Lofty Ranges. Because its showy nature and extreme hardiness it's a garden, parkland favourite within Australia. Notes: A shrub with an open straggly habit, stiff sharply pointed leaves bright red bottlebrush flowers tipped with yellow in summer. It grows to 5m. The flowers are a shade of red purple tipped with yellow arranged in spikes around the branches that continue to grow after flowering. Flowering occurs from November December sometimes other months and is followed by fruit that are woody capsules. It's a very hardy low-maintenance plant tolerant of pollution drought, often used as an ornamental in gardens parklands.
